Donald Trump threatened at the UN meeting that he might destroy Iran if Tehran refuses to make a peace agreement. However, he believes an agreement will be reached after the U.S. midterm elections.
U.S. President Donald Trump used his speech at the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, 22 Sep 2026 GMT+7, to explain that the war with Iran aims to prevent Tehran from developing nuclear weapons. He issued a stern warning that he might “crush this Islamic Republic completely” if no peace agreement is reached to end the conflict.
“I face a major decision: whether to allow an agreement with Iran that rebuilds their nation and makes it greater than ever before... or should I crush this Islamic Republic completely, swiftly, and prevent them from killing or destroying other people and countries again?” Trump said.
“Should I send them back to hell with no escape, no hope for greatness in the future or for their children and grandchildren?”
However, Trump predicted that his administration would be able to reach a peace agreement with Iran immediately after the U.S. midterm elections on 3 Nov, urging nations to join the U.S. in economically isolating Iran to pressure it back to the negotiating table.
“But I believe we will reach an agreement right after the election because there is no reason for them not to. They are waiting to see the results of my midterm elections,” he said.
Trump clearly reiterated that he will never allow Iran to possess nuclear weapons. “My only thought is that Iran will never have nuclear weapons.”
He also compared his leadership style and actions with the international community: “While others just talk, I act. While others talk about peace, I create it. While others ignore threats, I confront them. While others speak of courage, America has already shown it.”
Besides defending the decision to go to war with Iran, Trump is expected to criticize the UN and other international organizations for attempting to interfere with U.S. sovereignty and pushing left-leaning agendas. Last year, he shocked many by saying several countries are “going to hell” because of climate and immigration policies.
Trump is scheduled to meet with leaders from more than 11 countries to discuss key global conflicts, including talks with the Gulf Cooperation Council amid ongoing concerns over the Houthi rebels' advances in Yemen.
Additionally, Trump will meet with Delsy Rodriguez, Venezuela’s interim leader, to discuss opening oil business investments for the U.S. He also plans to sign a security agreement with Greenland and Denmark that will allow the U.S. to station more troops on the island.
