Polish authorities accused a Russian military helicopter of intruding into their airspace, leading them to scramble fighter jets to intercept and place ground forces on alert.
On Wednesday, 23 Sep 2026 GMT+7, Polish officials, members of NATO, revealed that a Russian military helicopter briefly violated their airspace, causing Poland to immediately dispatch fighter jets to intercept while putting ground forces on high alert.
The Polish military stated that a Russian Mi-8 helicopter flew over from Kaliningrad (a Russian territory surrounded by Poland and Lithuania) and entered Polish airspace approximately 300 meters deep, north of the city of Braniewo, for 42 seconds before flying back out.
The Polish military indicated that this incident demonstrates Russia is once again testing the readiness of Poland's air defense system.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and French President Emmanuel Macron stated that Russia is escalating hybrid attacks, including planned drone and missile strikes, to intimidate and diminish Europe's support for Ukraine.
Recently, mysterious fires and explosions have occurred at weapons factories in several NATO member countries such as Germany, Italy, Bulgaria, and Estonia, as well as Russian drone attacks on passenger trains in Ukraine near the Polish border, with many countries suspecting Russian involvement.
Moscow denies allegations of hybrid attacks and accusations that it is preparing to invade NATO countries. President Vladimir Putin affirmed that there are no plans to attack NATO.
Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov warned that if Europe initiates an attack on Russia first, it would lead to a very different and rapidly concluding war.
Hybrid warfare is a combat strategy combining conventional warfare (using weapons and military force) with unconventional methods such as cyberattacks, information warfare, and economic or political pressure to undermine a target's stability without declaring formal war.
