The U.S. Treasury Secretary announced that the United States and China will extend their trade war truce until January.
On Wednesday, 23 Sep 2026 GMT+7, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told Fox News after meeting with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng that both sides had reached an agreement to extend the “Busan Agreement” until next January.
This agreement, which eases tariff barriers between the U.S. and China, was originally set to expire on 10 September.
Additionally, Bessent said both parties discussed whether they could ultimately reach a more comprehensive and substantive trade deal, but “I don’t know if we can make a bigger deal or if we will just keep extending the current agreement.”
Bessent’s latest remarks come as Chinese President Xi Jinping has arrived in the U.S. for a summit with Donald Trump to discuss global challenges including trade tariffs, artificial intelligence technology, the Iran war, and the Taiwan issue.
