Chinese leader Xi Jinping told Donald Trump that he expects the United States to take a stance opposing Taiwan's declaration of independence and stated his readiness to support the U.S. in resuming negotiations with Iran.
On 24 Sep 2026 GMT+7, China's state-run Xinhua News Agency reported that President Xi Jinping said during a bilateral meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House that he hopes the U.S. will clearly oppose Taiwan's declaration of independence.
"China hopes the United States will firmly maintain the correct stance in opposing 'Taiwan independence,'" he added, expressing the expectation that the U.S. will handle the Taiwan issue with caution.
The U.S. has long maintained a position of not supporting Taiwan's declaration of independence and recognizes the One China policy, which acknowledges the People's Republic of China as the sole legitimate government of China and accepts Beijing's position that Taiwan is part of China.
However, the U.S. has never accepted mainland China's claim of sovereignty over the island of Taiwan.
Xinhua also reported that Trump and Xi discussed the conflict between the U.S. and Iran during the bilateral meeting.
According to Xinhua, Xi stated that China will support the U.S. and Iran in returning to the 14-point memorandum of understanding reached in June and hopes both sides will resume negotiations as soon as possible, ultimately aiming to reach an agreement on nuclear issues.
The U.S. is Taiwan's most important arms supplier and security guarantor, while the Chinese government has consistently opposed arms sales to the island, claiming Taiwan as part of its territory despite never having governed it.
