On Thursday, 24 Sep 2026 GMT+7, U.S. President Donald Trump told reporters that he had an excellent discussion with Chinese President Xi Jinping after a private bilateral meeting at the White House earlier, without revealing specific details.
Trump made the remarks while giving the Chinese leader a tour around the White House grounds, including a visit aboard Marine One, the presidential helicopter.
During the tour, Donald Trump joked that the Chinese media group was the friendliest, as Chinese photographers documented Xi Jinping's official visit on Thursday—the same day the White House denied U.S. journalists access, despite a court lifting the ban.
Trump declined to answer questions about the substance of the bilateral talks with the Chinese leader, including whether they discussed Taiwan, artificial intelligence (AI), or Jimmy Lai, the former Hong Kong media tycoon sentenced to 20 years in prison in China.
"President Xi is an expert on stones, among many other things, and he appreciates quality granite," Trump said while escorting Xi Jinping to the helicopter landing pad. They pointed to granite stones and conversed through an interpreter before Trump later showed Xi the new ballroom under construction.
Xi left the West Wing around 13:30 local time, exchanging brief words with Trump before boarding his vehicle, which was adorned with U.S. and Chinese flags on the hood sides, then returning to his residence to allow Trump to attend to other duties.
It is expected that Xi Jinping will return to the White House later that evening (local time) to attend a dinner event.
