The Iranian president told Fox News that Tehran does not want to continue fighting and is willing to make an agreement with Trump if the US follows international law, while tensions between the Houthis and Saudi Arabia remain high.
Iranian President Masoud Pessekian said the US must decide whether to end the war with Iran, emphasizing that Tehran does not want to continue fighting. He gave the interview to Fox News broadcast on 24 Sep 2023 GMT+7, as the conflict between the US and Iran continues.
Pessekian said that if both sides can resolve issues through dialogue, they should not resort to killing each other. He accused Israel of provoking and causing the war, stressing that Iran does not want to continue fighting and that the US must choose whether to end this war.
Earlier, Pessekian traveled to New York to attend the United Nations General Assembly, where he declared that Iran would not kneel before the US, even as President Donald Trump acknowledged ongoing negotiations between the two sides.
Iran Ready to Make Agreement with Trump
Pessekian confirmed that Iran remains prepared to reach an agreement with Trump to end the conflict, questioning why a ceasefire agreement collapsed just two weeks after being signed due to attacks.
The Iranian leader stated that if the current US administration wants to reach an agreement under the framework of international law, Iran is ready to proceed with talks, regardless of whether the deal is reached before or after the US midterm elections.
Previously, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Arakchi met with Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, but these discussions yielded no immediate significant progress.
"Pessekian" Denies Houthis Take Orders from Iran
Meanwhile, when asked about the fighting in Yemen between the Houthi group, seen as supported by Iran, and Saudi Arabia along with Yemen forces backed by Riyadh, Pessekian denied that the Houthis take orders from the Iranian government.
He said the Houthis are responsible for their own actions and do not receive orders from Tehran, although Tehran maintains contact with the group, emphasizing that their relationship is not systematic.
However, the US and its allies, including Saudi Arabia, have long accused Iran of supporting the Houthis, who are attacking Saudi Arabia with missiles and fighting forces supported by Riyadh.
Most recently, on 24 Sep 2023 GMT+7, Saudi Arabia reported intercepting six ballistic missiles fired by the Houthis aimed at the cities of Taif and Yanbu near the Red Sea, while the Houthis claimed attacks on key targets in Riyadh and the Saudi Aramco plant in Yanbu.
These events come amid escalating tensions in the region after the Houthis declared a naval blockade against Saudi Arabia and have seized more territory along Yemen’s Red Sea coast, affecting shipping routes and energy transport in the region.
