Donald Trump has rejected Iran's latest proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, describing it as an "unacceptable" offer, while indicating a high chance of launching new attacks on Iran after the midterm elections.
On Saturday, 26 Sep 2026 GMT+7, U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed he had rejected Iran's new proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and resume negotiations on Tehran's nuclear program in exchange for the U.S. lifting its naval blockade and ending other economic sanctions.
"I reject their offer," Trump said when asked by reporters about the proposal. "They want to make a deal to open the strait immediately because they are suffering heavy losses. They want to make a deal, which I think is good because I like making deals too, but this deal is unacceptable."
Earlier, Abbas Araghchi, Iran's Foreign Minister, stated that the proposal, submitted to the U.S. through Qatar earlier this week, demanded the U.S. comply with their conditions within seven days to begin new negotiations and reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
However, President Masoud Pezeshkian affirmed readiness to negotiate but would not accept "threats or coercion" nor relinquish Iran's rights to uranium enrichment capabilities.
The Wall Street Journal reported that Donald Trump privately rejected the proposal due to skepticism that Iran would adhere to the agreed conditions.
Additionally, Trump told his team and officials he sees a high possibility of launching a new bombing campaign against Iran after the U.S. midterm elections in November.
