China and the U.S. are preparing to open a communication channel on AI after Xi Jinping met with Donald Trump at a summit, with both agreeing to meet two more times at international meetings later this year.
Foreign news agencies reported on 26 Sep 2026 that China and the U.S. agreed to establish a bilateral communication channel covering issues related to artificial intelligence (AI) after President Xi Jinping and U.S. leader Donald Trump held a summit in New York City.
The two leaders discussed various topics ranging from AI to trade and the ongoing war in Iran. Both Xi Jinping and Donald Trump confirmed they will meet for the third and fourth times this year at the APEC summit in Shenzhen (November) and the G20 summit in Miami (December).
The Chinese and U.S. leaders hold differing views on AI. Donald Trump dismissed fears that AI could pose a threat or danger to humanity, while Xi Jinping took a more cautious stance, emphasizing that this technology must be developed under human control.
Beyond AI, the two countries reached agreements to reduce reciprocal tariffs by $30 billion, establish a trade council, and China agreed to import at least 10 million tons of U.S. coal during 2027-2028. China also plans to send two pandas to the Atlanta Zoo soon.
During the three-day visit to the U.S., Trump honored Xi Jinping with a state banquet, a military parade, and a tour of the National Archives. Trump said the meeting was held for "friendship, strength, and success."
Trump confirmed discussions with the Chinese leader about the U.S.-Israel-Iran conflict amid pressure over reports that China supports intelligence sharing with Tehran. When asked about progress in opening the Strait of Hormuz, Trump expressed confidence, saying, "I think we will do very well."
