On Sunday, 27 Sep 2026 GMT+7, UK police arrested five suspects while bomb disposal units (EOD) urgently inspected suspicious vans near RAF Fairford in western England, a base used by the US Air Force to support attacks on Iran.
Local residents and Gloucestershire police observed three suspicious vans moving toward RAF Fairford in the village of Whelford before officers detained five men on explosives-related charges.
Authorities then declared a major incident while military bomb disposal units deployed robots to examine the vans. A 400-meter security perimeter was established around the three vehicles, and 85 households were evacuated to a nearby recreation center.
Later, Gloucestershire police revealed additional charges against the five men for terrorism preparation. All remain in custody as investigations continue.
This incident follows Iran's prior threat that any bases used to attack Iranian territory would be considered legitimate targets for retaliation.
A US Air Force spokesman said, “Our 501st Combat Support Wing and other UK-based wings continue close surveillance and will take appropriate measures to ensure the safety and security of US personnel, civilians, contractors, and their families.”
“We continuously assess various factors to determine measures to implement or adjust to protect our facilities, personnel, and families,” he added.
A UK government spokesperson stated that Prime Minister Andy Burnham has been kept regularly informed but said, “It would be inappropriate to comment further while investigations are ongoing.”
