An avalanche occurred on one of the Himalayan peaks, causing 10 mountaineers who were preparing a camp to go missing, while rescue teams have not yet been able to reach the site.
Foreign news agencies reported that at least 10 Nepali mountaineers, who were preparing to guide an expedition in the Himalayas, went missing after an avalanche struck their base camp on the morning of Sunday, 27 Sep 2026 GMT+7. Authorities have not yet accessed the scene.
Bibhuti Jan Thakur from Himalaya Holidays Trekking, the organizer of the climb, told AFP, “Eight members of our team and two from another company have been reported missing” near the staging area close to the peak Himlung Himal in Manang district when the avalanche struck.
This Nepali team had been sent ahead of the foreign climbers to prepare the camp, manage the route, and fix ropes on the mountain.
Weather reports indicated heavy snowfall around Himlung Himal, which stands 7,126 meters tall on the Nepal-Tibet border in recent days. Severe weather has obstructed rescue efforts, preventing helicopters and rescue teams from reaching the area.
The mountainous regions of Nepal have experienced continuous rain and snow over the past several days, severely impacting the mountaineering tourism industry, which is vital to the country’s economy.
Earlier this week, climbers had to evacuate from Mount Manaslu, the world’s eighth highest peak, due to increased avalanche risk.
This disappearance of Nepali mountaineers comes less than two months after six climbers died on Broad Peak in Pakistan, including Nirmal Purja, the renowned British-Nepali mountaineer and snowboarder.
The incident also coincides with ongoing search operations for over 6,000 missing persons following massive floods and landslides along the Nepal-Tibet border in August, with confirmed deaths exceeding 1,400.
