On Sunday, 27 Sep 2026 GMT+7, Abbas Araghchi, Iran's Foreign Minister, confirmed that only negotiations can end the conflict after U.S. President Donald Trump rejected a new proposal from Tehran, which offered a ceasefire and opening the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for the U.S. lifting its maritime blockade and sanctions.
Donald Trump rejected Iran's proposal last Saturday, calling it “unacceptable” and stating that Iran's desire to reach an agreement to open the Strait of Hormuz for commercial vessels within seven days was because "they are suffering a heavy defeat." Trump reiterated that the U.S. already has full control over the Strait of Hormuz.
Meanwhile, Matthew Whitaker, U.S. Ambassador to NATO, told Fox News that Iran's proposal was merely a “half-hearted compromise” and “a deceptive agreement aimed at improving their image on the world stage,” emphasizing that “President Trump made the right decision by rejecting it.”
Scott Bessent, U.S. Treasury Secretary, posted on X that U.S. economic sanctions are severely impacting Iran, noting that Turkey, Oman, and the United Arab Emirates have suspended flights from Iranian airlines, and some banks in the UAE and Turkey have stopped transactions with Iran.
Abbas Araghchi posted on Telegram that only “negotiations” can end the conflict, and the conditions for opening the Strait remain as outlined in the memorandum of understanding (MOU) agreed upon by both parties in June.
Araghchi also commented on Trump, saying, “Trump has made many very good statements, as well as many contradictory ones, which unfortunately we hear quite often.” He added that Iran accepts Trump's rejection but will wait for an official and definite response through intermediaries before deciding the next steps.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian told U.S. CBS News that it is necessary to overcome the “mistrust” caused by this war for negotiations to succeed, and the U.S. must demonstrate that it “does not intend to overthrow our government.”
Pezeshkian also said that Trump tore up the MOU when the U.S. resumed attacks on Iran, questioning, “If we do not abide by what we have written, can we truly resolve the problem through negotiations?”
