International news agencies reported on 27 Sep 2026 GMT+7 that rescue teams recovered two bodies following an avalanche at the base camp near Himlung Himal peak in Nepal. About 12 people are still missing.
The avalanche occurred Sunday morning. The 12 missing are Nepalese guides and support staff sent ahead to prepare the camp, inspect the route, and fix ropes for foreign climbers.
Officials updated the number of victims after earlier reports of 10 missing local guides, including eight from Himalaya Holidays Trekking company.
Specialist climber rescue teams were airlifted from Kathmandu by helicopter. Search efforts are difficult due to severe weather and heavy snowfall, forcing a halt on Sunday and resuming on Monday (28 Sep).
Mountain regions of Nepal have experienced continuous rain and snow over recent days, severely affecting the climbing tourism industry, which is vital to the national economy.
Earlier this week, climbers had to evacuate from Mount Manaslu, the world's eighth-highest peak, due to increased avalanche risks.
This disappearance of Nepalese climbers comes less than two months after six climbers died on Broad Peak in Pakistan, including Nirmal Purja, a renowned British-Nepalese mountaineer and snowboarder.
The incident occurs amid ongoing search efforts for over 6,000 missing people from the massive floods and landslides on the Nepal-Tibet border in August, with more than 1,400 confirmed dead.
