Iran confirms its permanent representative to the United Nations has no plans for further negotiations with the United States, despite Donald Trump's statement that talks may occur soon, stating that Tehran has already made its position known to the U.S.
On Monday, 28 Sep 2026 GMT+7, Iran’s official news agency IRNA reported that the Iranian delegation attending the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York has no plans for additional talks with the U.S. side, following President Donald Trump’s claim that further negotiations might happen soon.
"The Iranian delegation in New York has no plans for any negotiations with the United States," IRNA quoted a source as saying, adding, "Iran's views and position have been communicated clearly and directly to the U.S. side... through Qatar as an intermediary." The Iranian delegation is scheduled to return to Tehran on Tuesday.
Over the past weekend, Iranian and U.S. officials held indirect talks on the sidelines of the UNGA, with Qatar acting as mediator. Tehran said it presented a seven-point proposal to end the conflict and reopen navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
However, on Saturday (26 Sep 2026 GMT+7), Trump rejected Iran’s proposal, stating that Tehran’s demands for the U.S. to end its maritime blockade, lift sanctions, and return frozen funds are "unacceptable."
Later, on Sunday, Trump told U.S. media outlet Axios that he expects negotiations to resume within a few days, while Axios reported that further indirect talks, mediated by Qatar, could happen as early as Monday.
Meanwhile, the war situation in the Middle East remains tense. Although direct clashes between the U.S. and Iran have eased since September, fighting has intensified in Yemen, where Houthi rebels and the Saudi-backed government forces have engaged in counterattacks.
The Houthi group has continuously attacked Saudi cities and advanced along the Red Sea coast, increasing their control over the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait. This vital shipping route is used by Saudi Arabia to transport oil and goods without passing through the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran has blocked since March.
