A Ukrainian army commander revealed that troops have recaptured more territory in northern Donetsk province and freed three villages from Russian control.
On Monday, 28 Sep 2026 GMT+7, a senior Ukrainian army commander disclosed that forces have reclaimed more territory in northern Donetsk province from Russia in an operation aimed at disrupting Moscow's offensive to capture key strongholds in eastern Ukraine.
Brigadier General Andriy Biletsky, who has led the “Vivaldi” operation in the area since last month, stated that Ukraine's 3rd Brigade recaptured an additional 51 square kilometers, bringing the total reclaimed area to 176 square kilometers. They also liberated three villages and restored Ukrainian control over two more villages.
The U.S.-based Institute for the Study of War (ISW) noted that the operation achieved an "operationally significant" goal by disrupting Moscow's efforts to encircle various Ukrainian cities.
Overall, Russian advances along the front lines have slowed this year, although Russian forces continue to pressure southern cities and have pushed deeper into the eastern city of Kostiantynivka. Donetsk province remains one of the most fiercely contested areas in the conflict.
Currently, Ukraine controls about 20% of Donetsk province, while Russia aims to seize full control. Russia demands Ukraine surrender all control of Donetsk as a condition for peace talks, but Ukraine has consistently refused and insists on the return of all occupied territory.
