Hurricane Polo has caused high sea surges and waves breaching barriers, flooding fishing communities on the Baja California Peninsula, while authorities are rushing to evacuate residents from risk zones.
Hurricane "Polo" intensified to Category 3 as it approached Mexico's Baja California Peninsula, causing flooding in several areas, especially the fishing town of Puerto San Carlos, where residents had to wade through water to evacuate their homes. Military personnel deployed armored vehicles to assist people out of the affected areas.
On Monday, the situation in Puerto San Carlos, Baja California Sur, Mexico, saw flooding due to Hurricane Polo approaching the area. Many families waded through water to leave their homes, some carrying children, pets, and belongings with them.
Mexican soldiers used military vehicles to help transport people along flooded roads, while hundreds gradually evacuated to shelters set up in schools and other locations after storm surges and large waves breached sea barriers into Puerto San Carlos, a town of about 5,700 residents.
Hurricane Polo is a Category 3 storm with sustained winds reaching approximately 185 kilometers per hour and is expected to bring between 150 and 300 millimeters of accumulated rainfall to parts of Baja California Sur.
Weather agencies have warned of life-threatening strong winds, flash flooding, and landslides. Mexican authorities have called on residents in vulnerable areas to evacuate to shelters and avoid travel until the situation is safe.
