Rebel groups in Myanmar and local officials have reported that the death toll from the Myanmar military's airstrikes in Rakhine State has increased to 50 after rescue teams found additional bodies.
On Tuesday, 29 Sep 2026 GMT+7, the Arakan Army, which is fighting the Myanmar military, stated that Monday's government airstrike in Kyauktaw town, Rakhine State, has caused at least 50 deaths and left at least 58 injured.
Local relief official Wai Hun Aung confirmed these figures and posted photographs on social media showing that among the bodies found on Tuesday were women and children.
A spokesperson for the Arakan Army accused the Myanmar military of "deliberately targeting crowded markets, schools, civilians, and residential buildings". Meanwhile, the Myanmar military stated they "exercised utmost restraint to avoid harm to civilians."
Myanmar has been embroiled in nationwide civil war since the military coup in 2021, fighting against ethnic armed groups including the Arakan Army and other insurgent groups.
This prolonged conflict has resulted in approximately 100,000 deaths and forced over 3.5 million people in this impoverished country to become displaced.
The Arakan Army spokesperson added that they will use all available means to retaliate against the Myanmar military and those involved in bombing civilians.
The airstrike in Kyauktaw this time is the most violent and bloodiest attack in Rakhine State since the hospital bombing in December, which killed at least 30 people.
