The US Secretary of State claimed that a terrorist plot targeting an airbase in England, used by the US to launch attacks on Iran, clearly involved foreign actors.
On Tuesday, 29 Sep 2026 GMT+7, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the suspected terrorist plot at RAF Fairford airbase in Gloucestershire, UK, clearly involved foreign parties.
"This suspected terrorist plot clearly shows foreign interference," Rubio said. "I think it connects us to reality, and that reality is we are dealing with various global elements, such as in the case of Iran, which has openly threatened to attack American interests worldwide."
"What may have occurred in the UK this past weekend is a very serious situation," Rubio continued. "There will be more information released over the coming days, but for now, this is all I can say."
The incident took place early Sunday morning when a female farmer in the village of Whelford reported to police about three suspicious vans near RAF Fairford, prompting a major incident declaration and evacuation of dozens of nearby households.
Police arrested five British men aged 23 to 25 from London on explosives-related charges, later adding attempted terrorism charges. However, all five were granted bail under strict travel and communication restrictions.
The UK Counter Terrorism Police (CTP) stated they are investigating all aspects, including whether the suspects acted as proxies for foreign states, knowingly or unknowingly.
Meanwhile, the Iranian Embassy in London completely denied involvement in the incident, condemning the accusations as baseless and malicious speculation.
US President Donald Trump expressed surprise and disapproval that the UK granted bail to the five suspects. "I can tell you, if it were up to me, I would say 'do not grant them bail.' I am very surprised they were released. If it were me, I wouldn’t do that," he said.
Officials continue to maintain tight security around RAF Fairford, although residents of Whelford have started returning home. The community remains anxious, confused, and alarmed by the unusual events in the area.
