A former American Idol contestant was found guilty of murdering his own wife along with several other charges, potentially facing life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.
On Tuesday, 29 Sep 2026, a U.S. jury deliberated for less than three hours before convicting 40-year-old Caleb Flynn, a former music minister from Ohio and ex-American Idol contestant, of murdering his 37-year-old wife, Ashley Flynn.
He was also convicted on eight additional charges, including premeditated murder and tampering with evidence, which could result in life imprisonment without parole. The court scheduled his formal sentencing for 5 Oct 2026.
On 16 Feb 2026, Flynn shot his wife twice in the back of the head while she was sleeping in their home in Tipp City, Ohio. He then told police that an intruder had broken in and shot her.
Prosecutors revealed crucial evidence in the form of over 100,000 text messages exchanged between Flynn and his 24-year-old former mistress Alleigha Botner, who had been an intern at his church. In August 2025, Flynn messaged Botner saying, "Last night I cried until 4 a.m. thinking of ways to kill her without going to jail," and, "I just want her to die."
Botner testified for the prosecution, stating she believed Flynn killed his wife. Additionally, AI-generated music allegedly composed by Flynn and intended for Botner was played in court as evidence.
Investigators from the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation testified that multiple apps on Flynn’s phone, including Instagram and AI music apps, had been deleted before his wife’s death. Flynn’s gun, previously stored in his pickup truck’s console, also went missing and has not been found to date.
Flynn’s attorney argued there was no direct evidence tying him to the crime and that infidelity alone does not prove murder. They questioned the validity of blaming Flynn for evidence destruction simply because the police could not find the gun. However, the defense did not present any witnesses.
Caleb Flynn had auditioned for American Idol’s 12th season in 2013 and received a "Golden Ticket" to Hollywood but did not advance to the main competition rounds.
