Severe Tropical Storm "Surigae" may move close to the Izu Islands south of Tokyo on Thursday. Authorities have warned the public to stay informed as the storm's path remains uncertain.
On 30 September 2026, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) advised the public to closely follow Severe Tropical Storm "Surigae" due to the storm's uncertain trajectory. It is expected to approach the Izu Islands south of Tokyo on Thursday, 1 October.
As of 06:00 on Tuesday, 29 September, Surigae was located over the sea south of Japan, moving northeast at approximately 15 kilometers per hour. Maximum sustained winds near the center were 108 kilometers per hour, with gusts up to 162 kilometers per hour. Forecasters expect the storm to continue northeast and possibly approach the Izu Islands on Thursday. Meanwhile, sea waves around the Izu Islands are likely to rise starting Wednesday, 30 September.
Additionally, moisture from the storm may feed into a frontal boundary over the southern coast of Honshu Island, increasing the risk of rainfall in that area.
