A dramatic incident occurred during a heavy rainstorm in Las Vegas when a man fell from a bridge into a drainage tunnel. Rescue personnel had to deploy a technical rescue team and use a rope system to rappel down before safely bringing him back up.
This dramatic event happened in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, following thunderstorms and heavy rain on the night of Monday, 28 September, which caused fast-flowing water to enter multiple drainage channels and tunnels.
At approximately 10:04 p.m. local time, the Clark County Fire Department was alerted that a man had fallen from a bridge into a drainage tunnel near Twain Avenue and Eastern Avenue.
Upon arrival, responders found the man standing amid the fast-flowing water. Rescue teams tried to reach him but could not get close due to the tunnel’s distance from their position and the strong current.
Ultimately, the technical rescue team stepped in, installed a rope system to rappel from a high point, and sent a rescuer down to the man. They secured him to the rope system and together pulled both up safely from the tunnel.
The man was assessed at the scene and was cleared to leave without any reports of additional injuries.
In late September, the Las Vegas Valley experienced heavy rain, lightning, and flash flood risks. Harry Reid International Airport recorded 0.23 inches (about 5.8 millimeters) of rain, marking the heaviest rainfall since February.
Heavily affected areas included Summerlin, Red Rock Canyon, and the western and southwestern parts of the valley. The heavy rain caused flash flooding on many roads, slowed traffic, and led to water pooling at major intersections like Sahara Avenue and Decatur Boulevard, as well as delays in outbound flights at the airport.
Officials warned that the fast-flowing water in concrete drainage channels is extremely dangerous. Firefighters have previously needed technical rescue teams to assist people trapped in drainage tunnels during flood situations.
