A Nigerian dancer completed a continuous 7-day dance marathon totaling 168 hours, aiming to break the individual world record for marathon dancing, though official confirmation from Guinness World Records is still pending verification.
Benjamin Daniel, known as "Ben Dancer," a 33-year-old Nigerian dancer, concluded his continuous 7-day, or 168-hour, marathon dance in Lagos on Tuesday. He began the challenge on 22 September, hoping to establish a new world record for the longest continuous dancing.
Daniel aimed to surpass the previous record of 127 hours set in 2023 by Saruchit Sutheer Chaktap, a 16-year-old dancer from India at that time.
However, Guinness World Records has not yet confirmed whether Daniel's dance meets the criteria for official certification. The organization must review the evidence and details after the challenge concludes, and the final decision depends on whether all rules were fully complied with.
Daniel told the Associated Press that his goal was not solely to break the world record but also to use the global attention as an opportunity to raise awareness of indigenous African dancers and to promote both business and education in the dance arts sector.
Throughout the event, many supporters traveled to Freedom Park to cheer Daniel on. Nigerian youth groups voiced encouragement, recorded his dancing, and at times even danced behind the barriers.
Daniel performed to music reflecting Nigeria's cultural diversity, including Afrobeat, Fuji, jazz, and Zouk genres. He also changed from dance attire into traditional Nigerian clothing during parts of the performance.
Before starting the challenge, Daniel revealed he had trained for over two years with intensive fitness routines, dietary adjustments focused on carbohydrates, and cardiovascular conditioning to prepare his body for prolonged dancing. A medical team was also present on-site to provide assistance if needed.
After completing the 168-hour dance, Daniel's challenge entered a critical phase—awaiting Guinness World Records' review to determine if his performance will be officially recognized as a world record.
