Mahathir Mohamad, the 101-year-old former Prime Minister of Malaysia, was hospitalized again for a medical check-up after his wife passed away last Monday.
Foreign news agencies reported that Mahathir Mohamad was admitted to the National Heart Institute (IJN) in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday night (29 Sep) for monitoring his condition, just one day after his wife's passing.
Local media reported that Mahathir was admitted as scheduled and his condition is stable. His second son, Mokhzani Mahathir, said there is "nothing to worry about" regarding his father's hospitalization.
Mokhzani added that the decision to hospitalize the 101-year-old Mahathir was to allow doctors to closely observe his condition after his wife, Dr. Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali, passed away last Monday.
"Father was admitted to IJN for observation. The past two days have been quite stressful for Tun Mahathir, but he is okay now," Mokhzani told Bernama on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Sufi Yusoff, Mahathir's press secretary, said that Mahathir is fatigued and has not rested enough since Siti Hasmah's death and is currently awaiting medical diagnosis results.
"He is tired from emotional ups and downs, the hot weather, and insufficient rest—none of which are good for someone aged 101," he told the New Straits Times newspaper.
Mahathir has a history of heart disease and has undergone several heart bypass surgeries. In recent years, he has been hospitalized frequently, most recently in January due to a hip fracture caused by a fall.
Siti Hasmah passed away at the National Heart Institute at age 100 last Monday. Malaysia held a state funeral to honor her lifelong contributions to medicine, public health, and social work. Her body was interred at the National Cemetery in Putrajaya that same evening.
