On Wednesday, 30 Sep 2026, UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham stated that the government believes Iran is involved in the suspected terrorist attempt at RAF Fairford airbase last weekend, which led to the arrest of five suspects on terrorism charges before they were granted bail.
"There is strong evidence that Iran was involved in the events at RAF Fairford airbase over the weekend," Burnham said, adding, "We will reveal more details at the appropriate time, but we can confirm our belief that Iran is connected to this."
He also addressed the bail of the suspects: "I think people need to understand that when we say 'released,' it is not what most people imagine because it is release under the strictest bail conditions. The authorities are controlling the situation very tightly and decisively. I can assure you of this."
The UK Prime Minister spoke about coordination with the US, saying, "UK and US security agencies have been in constant communication throughout the week to explain the situation and actions taken," and expressed full confidence in the UK security agencies' handling of the matter.
Five British men aged 23 to 25 were arrested on Sunday morning after police received reports of three suspicious vans near the base. A search found some petrol but no explosives, and one of the suspects had called 999 himself.
Initially, all five were charged with violating explosives laws, then charged with attempted terrorism. However, they were later released on the strictest bail conditions, with police describing this as an investigative strategy.
The Iranian Embassy in London issued a statement vehemently denying the allegations and condemning any baseless and malicious speculation attempting to link Iran to the incident.
