Russia has launched a heavy assault on Ukraine's energy infrastructure ahead of a harsh winter, causing widespread power outages affecting many people in multiple regions.
Foreign news agencies reported on 30 Sep 2026 that Ukrainian Prime Minister Serhiy Koretsky revealed Russia fired missiles and deployed drones in the largest attack on Ukraine's energy infrastructure in months, targeting Kyiv and surrounding areas, resulting in at least six deaths, including one child.
Russia's Ministry of Defense stated the strikes targeted energy stations supplying Ukraine's defense industry and claimed to have intercepted more than 380 Ukrainian drones overnight.
One of the targets was the Trypilska thermal power plant, a primary electricity producer for Kyiv located about 40 km from the capital. Plant officials confirmed damage occurred and are currently assessing its extent.
The Russian attacks affected 11 Ukrainian regions, leaving residents in parts of Kyiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, Sumy, and Mykolaiv without electricity. Private energy firm DTEK is working to restore power to over 8,000 homes, while the government has urged citizens to refrain from using major electrical appliances between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
Residents of Kyiv awoke to thick smoke and the smell of burning across the city after the overnight Russian strikes, prompting authorities to advise closing windows to avoid smoke inhalation.
Reports confirmed three deaths in Kyiv, including a child found under the rubble of damaged homes and one utility company employee. Additionally, one fatality occurred in the southern Mykolaiv region and two in the northeastern Sumy region, where a school was also struck.
Meanwhile, Ukraine responded by launching drone attacks on Russian military targets, including a drone storage facility in Donetsk. Ukraine's 3rd Brigade announced it had recaptured several communities near Lyman in Donetsk under a counteroffensive named 'Operation Vivaldi.'
