CCTV footage shows a Russian drone crashing into a school in Kyiv, damaging the building and causing a fire. Fortunately, all 164 students and staff were sheltering safely, so no injuries occurred.
Kyiv, Ukraine, faced another airstrike when a Russian drone hit a school in the Solomianskyi district on 1 Oct 2023 GMT+7. CCTV captured the moment the drone struck the building.
The CCTV footage reveals a powerful impact that severely damaged the building's wall, with some bricks collapsing to create a large hole exposing the interior staircase. Surrounding areas show fire damage and broken glass. Firefighters and police inspected the site and collected drone debris.
Serhii Movenko, head of the Solomianskyi district administration, stated that the Geran drone caused partial wall damage and a fire, but firefighters quickly contained the situation. Warhead fragments were found on the building's second floor, prompting bomb disposal experts to investigate.
It was fortunate that at the time, 104 students and 60 school staff had taken shelter inside after the air raid warning sounded. Everyone remained safe with no injuries.
Valentina Krona, the school principal, said that after the siren, all students and staff moved to the shelter and continued lessons there. They then heard a deep thud, different from a typical explosion. Upon inspection, officials found the school had been attacked and immediately alerted emergency responders.
The principal added that the shelter had been properly upgraded and maintained over three years, becoming a crucial refuge for students and staff. Despite frequent air raid warnings, the school continues classes uninterrupted.
This attack occurred amid ongoing Russian airstrikes in Kyiv. Ukraine continues to face drone and missile attacks while also deploying long-range drones to strike production sites and drone launch bases inside Russia.
