Flash Floods Strike Northern Nepal, Prompting Evacuations and Leaving at Least 5 Missing

A flash flood swept through a river in northern Nepal, damaging dozens of homes and leaving at least five people missing. Authorities are rushing to mobilize rescue teams to assist those affected.

Foreign news agencies reported on 11 Oct 2026 that flash floods struck homes and structures along the Budhi Gandaki River in northern Nepal last Sunday. Approximately 36 houses were swept away, four bridges were destroyed or damaged, and at least five people are missing.

In addition, the hydropower construction site, as well as electricity poles and communication towers along the riverbank, were also damaged.

Nepal's National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) stated that a landslide near the village of Chumchure blocked the river, forming a natural dam. When this dam broke, it triggered a flash flood that surged downstream.

The Nepalese army deployed helicopters and ground forces to assist those stranded, successfully rescuing at least 49 people. Authorities have issued warnings and are evacuating residents from high-risk zones such as the town of Arughat to safer areas.

Nepal is still recovering from the massive floods in August near the Nepal-China border, which caused over 1,400 deaths. Prime Minister Balendra Shah announced the end of search operations to focus on infrastructure rebuilding, with recovery costs estimated at over 4.77 billion U.S. dollars.
