Russia has rejected the Ukrainian president's proposal for a 60-day ceasefire and declined to comment on the "energy ceasefire agreement" that Trump claimed both countries had agreed to.
On Monday, 12 Oct 2026 GMT+7, Dmitry Peskov, Kremlin spokesman, said that President Putin and other Russian officials have repeatedly stated, "We do not want a ceasefire; we want long-term peace and are ready to do everything to achieve that goal."
Peskov's statement was a rejection of the 60-day ceasefire idea proposed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Sunday to pave the way for his country to hold presidential elections, following Donald Trump's call for Ukraine to change its president.
Last Saturday, Trump criticized Zelensky for Ukraine’s attack on a Russian oil refinery, just one day after the U.S. temporarily lifted sanctions on Russian fuel to allow millions of tons of Russian diesel to enter the U.S. and global markets, drawing condemnation from Zelensky who saw this as supporting war funding for Russia.
On Sunday, Donald Trump posted that Ukraine and Russia had reached an immediate energy sector ceasefire agreement, which Zelensky supported, but Russia remained silent amid reports that Ukraine’s energy systems continued to be targeted by Russian attacks.
On Monday, Peskov was asked to comment on the "energy ceasefire agreement" Trump mentioned, but he refused to provide details, saying only, "Communication is ongoing. As soon as we have clarifications on this matter, we will inform you."
President Zelensky said on Monday that it is becoming increasingly clear that Russia refuses to accept the U.S.-proposed ceasefire on attacks against power plants and energy infrastructure, after Moscow struck six key Ukrainian energy sites on Monday.
