Peru Tightens School Rules: Government Proposes Ban on Nail Polish and Makeup for Girls, Long Hair for Boys to Address Bullying

The Peruvian government has proposed stricter school regulations banning female students from wearing nail polish and makeup, limiting skirt length, and prohibiting boys from having long hair, aiming to address bullying and violence in schools. Meanwhile, women's rights groups have voiced opposition.

On 14 Oct 2026 GMT+7, Peruvian President Keiko Fujimori said during a visit to a school on the outskirts of Lima that the government must restore order in schools and classrooms. The proposed measures include banning female students from wearing nail polish and makeup, limiting skirt length, prohibiting boys from having long hair, expelling students for serious misconduct, and strictly banning mobile phone use without teacher permission.

The government stated that these proposals are part of a plan to address bullying, sexual harassment, and violence in schools.

However, two women's rights organizations—the Manuela Ramos Movement and the Peru Flora Tristan Women's Center—expressed disagreement, stating that these measures miss the point. They argue that controlling students' hairstyles or makeup does not help prevent sexual abuse or violence in schools.
