Donald Trump has ordered the cancellation of the plan to livestream the firing squad execution of a former military doctor who carried out a mass shooting at a U.S. military base, following heavy opposition both domestically and internationally.
On Thursday, 15 Oct 2026 GMT+7, U.S. President Donald Trump issued an order canceling the plan to livestream the firing squad execution of prisoner Nidal Hasan, a former U.S. Army psychiatrist, after facing intense criticism both inside and outside the country.
The U.S. Department of Defense announced the livestream plan last week, prompting immediate opposition from human rights organizations and international agencies. The United Nations (UN) condemned the plan as "disgusting and repulsive."
Most recently on Thursday, Trump canceled the plan, stating, "Many good and well-meaning people probably do not want to watch him die... I thought broadcasting the execution to everyone might serve as a strong deterrent, showing the world how America deals with terrorists and scum like Hasan."
Trump confirmed that Hasan will still be executed by firing squad as originally scheduled on 3 Dec 2026 GMT+7, but there will be no livestream. Only the victims' families will be allowed to attend the execution in person.
In 2009, Hasan carried out a mass shooting inside the medical building at Fort Hood military base, where many unarmed soldiers were waiting for physical exams and vaccinations before deployment. The attack resulted in 13 soldiers killed and 32 wounded, marking the deadliest non-war attack on a U.S. military base in history.
In court, Hasan admitted to the shooting and claimed he acted to protect Muslims and the Taliban in Afghanistan from U.S. military invasions.
