Pope Leo XIV Shows Good Recovery After Lung Cancer Surgery, Resumes Work from Hospital

Doctors report that Pope Leo XIV is recovering well after lung cancer surgery. Post-operative test results are within normal limits. He is fully mobile and has started working from the hospital.

On 15 October 2026, Dr. Luigi Carbone, Pope Leo XIV’s personal physician, and Dr. Stefano Margaritola, chief thoracic surgeon at Gemelli Hospital, announced that the Pope is recovering well after surgery to remove a suspected cancerous mass from his lung. They reported that his lung is recovering well, post-surgery tests are normal, and he is undergoing physical therapy to fully regain movement, as well as managing daily activities independently.

The Vatican Office revealed that Pope Leo XIV met with Archbishop Paolo Rudelli, his key assistant responsible for the Vatican’s daily administration, and has resumed official duties from the hospital.

The 71-year-old Pope underwent surgery on Tuesday to remove the lower lobe of his right lung after detecting a suspicious mass. Post-surgical tests confirmed it was adenocarcinoma, the most common lung cancer type. However, doctors are still awaiting molecular analysis to determine if the cancer has spread beyond the removed lobe and to assess the need for further treatment. He is expected to stay hospitalized at least until 20 October.
