Timeline Revealed of Oregon School Shooting: Teacher Fights Gunman, Parent Stops Shooter

A timeline has been revealed of a shooting at an Oregon elementary school, where a heroic teacher rushed to wrest a shotgun from a 16-year-old attacker while he was shooting children in a classroom. A student's father driving by then used a gun to shoot the assailant dead.

Updates on the Silver Rail Elementary School shooting in Bend, Oregon, U.S., which left three children and one teacher dead: police disclosed details of the confrontation, stating a teacher tried to wrest the weapon from the attacker, while a father of two students driving past the school decided to intervene with a gun and shot the assailant dead.

According to police information released Friday, the suspect is 16-year-old Griffin J. John II, a former student of the school who had special needs.

Before the attack, the suspect arrived at the school, believed by police to have come on foot, then began shooting in the parking lot before firing through a window to enter the building.

When the suspect started shooting inside the special needs classroom, a female teacher decided to throw her phone aside, then charged and fought the attacker, trying to wrest the shotgun from him despite struggling on the classroom floor amid the dangerous situation with children and staff present.

Meanwhile, the father of two girls, driving by the school during lunchtime, saw the suspect shooting at cars outside before entering the building. He retrieved his legally carried handgun from his vehicle and confronted the gunman.

Police said the man fired several shots, killing the suspect and ending the shooting. At the time the attacker was stopped, about 44 shotgun rounds remained on him, with an estimated 15 shots fired inside the classroom.

U.S. media reported the parent who stopped the shooter is Kailub Giamanco, 36, a carpenter. On the day of the incident, he had just finished lunch and was driving home when he encountered the shooting at his daughter's school.

Police have not officially released the man’s name, but his family told the media he decided to intervene after seeing the shooting unfold.

Kenda Freeman, his mother from Sacramento, California, said her son called shortly after the incident, deeply traumatized. He told her he saw the attacker enter his daughter's school and shoot children before deciding to shoot the assailant dead. He expressed regret for not being able to save everyone.

President Donald Trump praised the man who stopped the shooter, calling him a hero and saying the outcome could have been much worse without his intervention.

Police have confirmed two of the deceased: five-year-old Roam Summer and 25-year-old teacher Megan Lambert. Two other children aged 8 and 11 remain unnamed at their families’ request.

Additionally, two others were injured: a 54-year-old teacher currently hospitalized and a critically injured but stable seven-year-old student.

Mike Krantz, Bend’s police chief, thanked those who bravely intervened in the violent situation, saying the actions of the teacher and the father prevented further deaths. He confirmed the teacher who wrestled the shotgun was unharmed and that her decision almost certainly reduced bloodshed.

Police are still searching the suspect's home, investigating how he acquired the firearm, tracing his movements, and determining his motive, which remains unclear.
