Mexican Court Sentences Three Men to 158 Years Each for Murder of Australian Siblings and Friend

A Mexican court sentenced three Mexican men to 158 years each for the murder of two Australian brothers and their friend during a pickup truck robbery, before hiding and concealing the bodies.

International news agencies reported on 17 Oct 2026 that a judge in Mexico sentenced three defendants to 158 years and 9 months each after they were found guilty of murdering Australian brothers Jake and Callum Robinson and their American friend Carter Road.

The tragic incident occurred in 2024 when the Robinson brothers and Road, all surfers, traveled to a secluded beach in Baja California. They were attacked by three assailants, believed to be attempting to steal their pickup truck. The robbery attempt failed and ended with the attackers killing the Robinson brothers and Road.

The three defendants are Jesus Gerardo, Irineo Francisco, and Angel Jesus; the court only revealed their first names for legal reasons. In November of the previous year, Jesus Gerardo’s girlfriend, who was the planner, was sentenced to 20 years in a separate trial after admitting her involvement in the robbery.

The murders occurred just 36 hours after the Robinson brothers and Road crossed the border from the U.S. into Mexico. Their bodies were dumped in a water well with gunshot wounds to the head. Authorities took over a week to locate the bodies and required the families to confirm their identities.

Mexican officials acknowledged at the time that the surfers were killed simply for being "in the wrong place at the wrong time."

Debra Robinson, mother of the Australian victims, said in court that the murder of her two sons "destroyed the future the family had once imagined sharing with them."

The incident shocked the world, especially Australia, and caused fear among residents and tourists in the beach city of Ensenada, an area typically known for its safety and friendliness to surfers.

Local surfers have called on the government to increase security measures for residents and tourists, as tourism is a vital part of Baja California’s economy.
