Sudan Military Drone Attacks on Funeral and Market Kill 300, Injure Hundreds

Sudan military drones attacked a funeral venue and a market near the border, resulting in over 300 deaths amid ongoing civil war within the country. They struck amidst the internal conflict and chaos.

BBC reported that on Sunday night (18 Oct 2026), Sudan military drones targeted trucks carrying about 200 funeral attendees arriving in Al-Dabbah city in West Kordofan state, killing 145 people. Additional strikes on funeral tents caused 5 more deaths, bringing the total at this site to 150 dead and 150 injured.

Additionally, bombs were dropped on a market in Al-Mujlad city in the same state, though exact numbers of casualties remain unclear.

On Monday (19 Oct 2026), drone strikes hit the Amiet market near Abyei city, a disputed border area between Sudan and South Sudan. Initial reports stated 73 deaths; however, the Information Ministry confirmed on Tuesday that the death toll had risen to 153.

Military sources told BBC that the Sudanese army carried out the attack, claiming the market served as a fuel supply hub for the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), the rebel faction fighting government troops.

This incident heightened tensions between Sudan and South Sudan, as Abyei is an oil-rich region contested by both sides. South Sudan summoned Sudan's ambassador for a formal protest.

The United Nations and humanitarian groups expressed deep concern over drone attacks targeting civilians, including children, amid a hunger crisis affecting over 20 million people.

The civil war between Sudan's military and the RSF, which erupted in 2023, has killed hundreds of thousands and displaced over 14 million people.
