Prince Harry Opens Up About Desire to Reconcile with Family, Reveals Return to England Is for His Children

Prince Harry confirmed his desire to reconcile with his father and elder brother, revealing that he and his family decided to return to England so his children could study there and be closer to family.

BBC News reported on 20 Oct 2026 that Prince Harry, aged 42, gave an interview to GQ magazine in New York City in late September, stating he wants to repair his complex relationship with King Charles III, his father, and Prince William, his elder brother.

Prince Harry said, “Some people may not want it to go smoothly, but I want it to succeed. Amid everything happening in the world, the most important thing is reconciliation. That is the heart of it.”

He added, “Emotional wounds will last forever, but what matters is your perspective and attitude toward what has happened. Letting go of the past is something I want to encourage everyone to do.”

Prince Harry acknowledged that the royal family conflicts attract significant public attention, saying the issue “deeply resonates and connects with people’s feelings.”

“Conflicts between siblings, broken relationships between children and parents, or with one parent, are common issues among the people I have spoken with,” Prince Harry revealed.

When asked why he decided to return to England after moving to the United States in 2020, Prince Harry replied, “For family opportunities. Sending my children to schools in England means a lot to me. I never realized how important it was.”

“They (Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet) love it very much, and it offers a completely different experience,” Prince Harry said, adding that returning to England would mean “being closer to family and staying on English soil longer than just a few days or weeks.”

Prince Harry spoke of his father after his cancer treatment, saying the King’s condition is “steadily improving.”

He also discussed growing up with the loss of his mother, Princess Diana, in 1997, saying he now can draw on her memory as motivation for his work, rather than letting grief hold him back.

“I like the fact that now I can carry my mother’s memory with me in my work instead of letting it pull me down, pull me back, or sink me into sorrow,” he said.

Prince Harry emphasized he does not seek public sympathy, noting he has a support network, has undergone various therapies, and takes his self-care seriously.

“I definitely don’t want sympathy. We’ve come a long way past that. Why? Because I am a prince, I have a support network, I have undergone multiple forms of therapy, and I take it seriously. I even wonder where I would be if I hadn’t done this, which could be a very different situation,” he said.

A spokesperson for Prince Harry and Meghan clarified that the interview was recorded in late September and that the timing of its release was entirely at the publisher’s discretion, urging no assumptions be made about the timing of the publication.

The spokesperson also confirmed that Prince Harry’s comment that “some people may not want it to go smoothly” was not intended as a jab or reference to Prince William or any other royal family member.
