Japan Warns to Prepare for Typhoon Champi Approaching Southern Islands

Japan has issued a warning to prepare for Typhoon Champi, which is expected to approach the Sakishima Islands from Friday with strong winds, waves reaching up to 11 meters, and heavy rainfall.

On 21 Oct 2026 GMT+7, Japan's Meteorological Agency warned that Typhoon Champi is likely to move near the southwestern islands of Japan from Friday through Saturday, with the Sakishima Islands in Okinawa Prefecture expected to face strong winds, high waves, and heavy rain.

Reports stated that at 09:00 on Wednesday, Typhoon Champi was moving northwest over the sea east of the Philippines at a speed of 25 kilometers per hour. The storm had intensified since Tuesday night, with maximum wind speeds near its center exceeding 200 kilometers per hour and gusts over 300 kilometers per hour.

Officials expect that from Friday, the sea around the Sakishima Islands will have waves up to 11 meters high and have warned residents to prepare for the storm's effects in advance. Afterwards, the typhoon is likely to change course toward the northeast, but its path remains uncertain and may impact some areas in western Japan as well.
