Storm "Adam" has severely struck southern France and eastern Spain, causing severe flooding that disrupted travel. At least seven fatalities have been reported so far, according to the latest figures from the area.
Foreign news agencies reported on 22 Oct 2026 that France confirmed four deaths and one injury from storm "Adam," which caused widespread flooding in the southern part of the country last Tuesday. Roads became impassable, impacting transportation.
Among the deceased were two women, aged 86 and 26, found drowned in a basement of a house in the Bouches-du-Rhône department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region of southern France.
Another death was reported on the island of Corsica, which also experienced severe weather. Local media reported that a four-wheel-drive vehicle was swept away by floodwaters on Tuesday; the passenger escaped through a window. However, authorities have not disclosed details about the fourth deceased individual.
Meanwhile, dozens of residents in the villages of Mouriès and the community of Saint-Martin-de-Crau, located between Montpellier and Marseille, had to evacuate to temporary shelters.
Flooding severely affected transport routes, including roads and railways. Jacques Witkowski, prefect of the Bouches-du-Rhône department, said water levels rose to unprecedented heights.
France is now preparing for a new storm named "Austen," moving in from the Atlantic Ocean. An orange-level alert has been issued for strong gusty winds in five departments in the northwest.
Meanwhile, Spain has also been impacted by storm "Adam," with severe flooding in the eastern part of the country resulting in at least three deaths.
Several towns along Spain's Mediterranean coast were cut off by flooding. Authorities had to use helicopters to rescue residents stranded on rooftops.
Emergency personnel from the Spanish military found the body of a woman in the town of Oliva in Valencia province during rescue operations on Monday, 19 Oct. Over the weekend, two other female bodies were found—one washed ashore in Sagunto and another swept away by floods in Cabrera de Mar near Barcelona.
Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez promised that the central government would provide funds to aid recovery efforts. Meanwhile, the Valencia regional government approved a 23.5 million euro assistance package for those affected.
