An Indian YouTuber was arrested on charges of attempted extortion and defamation after a popular financial influencer was subjected to online pressure and bullying that led to his suicide.
Foreign news agencies reported on 22 Oct 2026 that V. Harish, 27, owner of the Instagram account “Finance with Harish,” which provided popular investment advice to over 1.3 million followers, was found dead at his home near Chennai on the morning of Tuesday, 20 Oct.
On Thursday, police arrested Jason Samuel, a YouTuber and tech startup CEO, on charges of attempted extortion and posting defamatory videos targeting Harish, which caused Harish severe psychological distress and ultimately led to his decision to end his life.
This incident sparked intense debate in India about cyberbullying and who should be authorized to provide financial advice to new investors.
Harish’s main Instagram account was shut down by Meta in September after complaints that he lacked a license from the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), a legal requirement for anyone giving investment advice.
Harish’s father, J. Vinayagam, filed a complaint stating his son was under heavy stress from online bullying, defamatory posts, and repeated blocking of his channel following Jason Samuel’s video accusing Harish of operating without a license and questioning his credibility on 18 Oct.
“We demand a proper investigation and legal action against Jason Samuel and his associates, who spread defamation on social media and caused mental distress through cyberbullying,” the complaint filed by Vinayagam stated.
Before his death, Harish recorded a video expressing his frustration, saying, “Five years of hard work have been stolen,” and apologized to his parents, family, and followers.
Later, Samuel posted a message expressing condolences for Harish’s passing while denying the cyberbullying allegations, stating his actions were to protect consumer interests.
Samuel also insisted he only exposed the fact that Harish operated without a license and engaged in illegal activities, adding he never anticipated such a tragic outcome.
However, police statements noted that Vinayagam filed a complaint alleging "encouraging or abetting suicide." Preliminary investigations linked Samuel to the case, leading to his arrest; he will be presented in court and held in custody.
