Typhoon Champi Approaching Taiwan, Heavy Rainfall Expected Partial Evacuations and Numerous Flight Cancellations Ordered

Taiwan is preparing for Typhoon "Champi," expecting heavy rain and strong winds with potential rainfall accumulation up to 900 mm. Authorities have ordered partial evacuations and canceled numerous flights.

On 23 Oct 2026 GMT+7, Taiwan's Central Weather Bureau reported that the outer rain bands of Typhoon Champi have reached Taiwan. The storm's impact is expected to bring heavy rain and gusty winds covering most of the island. The typhoon's influence spans approximately 320 kilometers in radius, with severe weather expected to continue through the night before moving toward southern Japan by Saturday evening.

It was also reported that mountainous areas in the northern and northeastern parts of the island may experience rainfall accumulation up to 900 millimeters. Taiwanese authorities urged people to avoid coastal and mountainous areas and ordered partial evacuations of residents near dams on the northeastern coast due to landslide risks from the storm's impact.

Meanwhile, dozens of flights in Taiwan and Japan have been canceled, affecting thousands of passengers. Typhoon Champi is among the strong storms arising amid the super El Niño phenomenon, which raises Pacific Ocean temperatures and promotes storm development.
