U.S. prosecutors are moving forward with charges against former FBI Director James Comey for disclosing classified defense information. He is accused of leaking secret information to The New York Times in 2016, while he maintains his innocence.
On 27 Oct 2026 GMT+7, foreign news agencies reported that U.S. federal prosecutors charged James Comey, former Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), with disclosing classified defense information. The court documents list two charges but provide limited details. Comey's attorney stated in another document that the case concerns allegations he leaked classified information to The New York Times in October 2016, while serving as FBI Director.
Comey denies wrongdoing, calling the allegations a “stunning abuse of power.” He insists on his innocence, expressing no fear of those prosecuting him and confidence in the independence of the federal justice system.
This prosecution took place in Washington, D.C., through a criminal information filing, which prosecutors can submit directly to the court. This differs from an indictment, which requires approval from a grand jury to assess whether there is sufficient evidence to proceed. This is the third criminal prosecution attempt by the U.S. Department of Justice against Comey, who has long been a vocal critic of U.S. President Donald Trump.
