High-Speed Train Collision in Spain Kills 68

A high-speed train in Spain crashed into the rear of a train stopped on the tracks in Castilla-La Mancha, with the death toll rising to 68 and dozens injured. Rescue efforts continue to find survivors amid suspicions of a command error from the control center.

On 28 Oct 2026, a collision between two high-speed trains occurred in Toledo province, Castilla-La Mancha, south of Madrid, Spain. The latest death toll is at least 68, with dozens more injured. This is the deadliest rail accident in the country since 2013.

Local officials reported 58 injured people hospitalized, while rescue teams continue searching for survivors and victims in the heavily damaged train wreckage.

Rail infrastructure providers stated that both trains were traveling from Madrid to Seville in the southwest of Spain. The private company Iryo's train was stopped on the tracks when it was struck from behind by the national rail company Renfe's train. The impact caused two cars of the first train to derail.

Spain's Transport Minister Oscar Puente said the cause may be linked to control center commands after a computer or safety system malfunction forced an initial train stoppage. He confirmed that the train driver was not at fault and that an official investigation is ongoing.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez visited the crash site, calling the period a time of national mourning. Major political parties have temporarily suspended general election campaigning out of respect.
