The Ethiopian Prime Minister led the cabinet and senior officials in military training, stating that this promotes readiness both physically and mentally, and helps develop strong leaders.
Foreign news agencies reported on 31 Oct 2026 GMT+7 that Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed led the cabinet and senior government officials to participate in military training, stating that military discipline can help build stronger leaders and drive the country's development.
Abiy Ahmed posted images on social media showing himself training alongside ministers, deputy ministers, and government agency heads at the Hurso Military Training Center. Such images are rare since senior civilian government officials have seldom been seen undergoing military training before.
Participants in the training included Muferiat Kamil, Speaker of Parliament; Fitsum Assefa, Minister of Finance; and Mekdes Daba, Minister of Health. However, it remains unclear when the training started and how long it will last.
In his post, Prime Minister Ahmed stated that Ethiopia’s ambition for inclusive prosperity requires a leadership team physically prepared, morally strong, and intellectually capable. Military institutions provide valuable lessons in discipline, patriotism, teamwork, responsibility, and leadership.
"The military pursues strategic objectives, while civilians have developmental goals, but both share the same purpose: victory," Ahmed said, adding that combining military and civilian discipline will help create a new generation capable of achieving both aims.
Ahmed affirmed that military training can develop leaders who are committed, responsible, and skilled at working together to achieve shared goals.
This training occurs while Ethiopia faces multiple security challenges, including ongoing fighting in parts of the northern Tigray region, conflicts in the Amhara region, and unrest in Oromia.
Additionally, tensions have escalated with neighboring Eritrea amid concerns about the possibility of renewed conflict between the two countries.
