Germany Vows Severe Punishment After Riots Leave Over 100 Police Injured

Germany's minister condemned the riots in Frankfurt that left over 100 police officers injured, stating that severe punishments will be enforced and those responsible will be brought to justice.

Foreign news agencies reported on 1 Nov 2026 that several German ministers condemned the rioters and looters in Frankfurt, which resulted in over 100 police officers injured. They threatened heavy penalties and praised security forces for preventing the situation from escalating further.

On the night of Saturday, 31 Oct, tens of thousands gathered in several cities to protest for education and lower living costs. In Frankfurt, a group wearing knit caps vandalized 17 shops, looted 5 stores, and threw Molotov cocktails, stones, and glass bottles at police officers.

Police deployed more than 1,300 officers to control the riots, resulting in over 100 officers injured and 54 suspects arrested, aged between 13 and 29 years.

Following the incident, Roman Posek, Interior Minister of the state of Hesse, expressed shock at the events, saying, “I am shocked by what I have seen. There is no benefit in sugarcoating this. Let me be clear: this cannot continue.”

Posek added that most of those arrested are German citizens. However, police data indicates that about 1,000–1,500 violent rioters were involved, mostly individuals with immigrant backgrounds.

Alexander Dobrindt, Germany's Federal Minister of the Interior, confirmed that severe punishment will be imposed and perpetrators brought to justice. He accused some rioters from immigrant communities of collaborating with left-wing extremist groups, though he did not provide clear evidence.

German authorities increased border security ahead of the protests, fearing that foreign extremists might exploit the situation to incite riots. This concern was compared to recent riots and widespread looting in France on 17 Oct, which caused damage to over 2,000 shops.
