Former British Paratrooper Completes 28-Year Walk Around the World, Returns Home to Warm Welcome

Carl Bushby, a 57-year-old British adventurer, has returned to his hometown, concluding a journey on foot covering more than 49,800 kilometers that began at the southern tip of South America 28 years ago.

On 2 Nov 2026 GMT+7, international news agencies reported that Carl Bushby, the 57-year-old British adventurer, arrived in Hull, England, his hometown. He was greeted by large crowds cheering in front of Hull City Hall at Queen Victoria Square, where a large sign saying "Welcome Home Carl" was displayed. The sign was made by Hull City Council to honor Bushby after his 28-year trek on foot from the southernmost tip of South America.

Reports state that Bushby was formerly a paratrooper in the British Army before beginning his journey from Punta Arenas, Chile, on 1 Nov 1998. He vowed to return home solely on foot, without using motorized vehicles. Throughout his trip, he crossed areas on four continents, including the dense Darién Gap between Panama and Colombia and the frozen Bering Strait between Russia and Alaska, before swimming across the English Channel last October.

Bushby told the welcoming crowd that he had never experienced a homecoming like this before. He added that after traveling for 28 years, he could not ask for anything more. He was welcomed by Hull’s mayor and the Member of Parliament for Hull East before setting off on the final leg to his mother’s home in the same city, concluding a journey totaling about 31,000 miles, or nearly 49,900 kilometers.
