UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham joined a cricket game during his visit to Antigua and Barbuda but lost his footing and slipped in the middle of the field. He quickly got up, returned to his position, and joked that he hadn't played for a long time.
It became a moment of smiles when UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham took to the field to play cricket with athletes at Powell Cricket Ground in St. John's, Antigua and Barbuda, on 2 Nov 2026 GMT+7. During the match, he slipped and fell hard on his backside in the middle of the field before quickly getting up and running back to his position.
Burnham continued playing and joked in English, "I haven't played in a while, you can tell, right?" to lighten the mood.
Burnham traveled to Antigua to attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), held every two years, where leaders from 56 Commonwealth member countries gather to strengthen relations and discuss cooperation amid a changing global political landscape.
The meeting is expected to announce new agreements and commitments, with leaders and officials from countries including Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Brazil, and the United Arab Emirates participating. The official opening ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday morning, following cultural activities that began over the weekend.
Earlier, Burnham expressed openness to issuing a formal apology for the UK's role in the transatlantic slave trade. While rejecting demands for direct reparations, he proposed leading a debt restructuring program to assist the poorest Commonwealth member countries.
The issue of reparations for the slave trade remains a key topic some Caribbean leaders want raised at the meeting. King Charles III attended after visiting the Bahamas and Guyana last week, accompanied by Queen Camilla.
