The AP Voter Poll reveals American voters' dissatisfaction with the country's direction and President Trump's administration, with about six in ten respondents opposing his policies.
About six in ten respondents in the AP Voter Poll disapprove of Trump's performance, while around two-thirds say government policies have worsened their living conditions, especially regarding economic problems, cost of living, and inflation—key issues in the 2026 midterm elections.
Josh Boak, a reporter for The Associated Press (AP), analyzed the poll results, noting that although President Trump is not a candidate in this midterm election for the House of Representatives and Senate, many voters view the election through the lens of the president's performance.
The AP Voter Poll shows Trump's approval rating at about four in ten, with disapproval at around six in ten, indicating that his administration's performance is a major factor for voters when casting their ballots.
Regarding voters' main concerns, about four in ten see the economy as the country's biggest problem, while three in ten cite the state of democracy. Additionally, roughly two-thirds of respondents feel Trump's policies have worsened their standard of living.
More than half of voters say inflation is a key factor influencing their choice of congressional candidates, along with concerns about government corruption, reflecting the public's desire for the government to address livelihood issues and combat abuses of power.
Furthermore, about seven in ten voters want Congress to serve as a strong check and balance on the White House, believing that the House and Senate should have equal power to the president and executive branch, rather than merely supporting government policies.
The poll also finds that approximately three in four voters feel angry or dissatisfied with the current direction of the country, with only about one in four feeling satisfied or optimistic. The overall economic outlook is negative, with around three in four judging the economy as poor or worsening.
Regarding the Iran war, about one in three voters consider it a very important factor in their congressional voting decisions, though this is less significant than concerns over cost of living and corruption.
The poll reflects that this midterm election is not just about winning a congressional majority but also an opportunity for the public to express opinions on Trump's administration over the past two years, especially regarding expectations to resolve economic and living cost issues that remain major concerns for Americans.
