Police in three European countries have issued warnings to be cautious of sharp objects that may be hidden in candies and sweets given to children during Halloween. Several children have already been injured after consuming such treats.
Foreign news agencies reported on 4 Nov 2026 that police in Germany, Austria, and Hungary have warned parents to thoroughly check candies their children receive while trick-or-treating during Halloween. This follows reports of needles, pins, nuts, screws, and wire fragments found concealed inside dozens of sweets and chocolates.
German police stated that authorities have received reports across several states, from Bavaria in the south to Lower Saxony in the north. In the town of Bremervörde, a 9-year-old girl injured her tongue after biting into a chocolate bar containing a hidden 5 cm long needle.
Meanwhile, Bavarian police noted a significant increase in reports of sharp objects found in sweets this year, with as many as 25 cases. Officials also warned of the risk of copycat behavior after a mother reported finding a needle in candy, but later admitted her child confessed to inserting the needle into the sweets.
In Hungary, police have launched a criminal investigation after discovering nails, screws, and wires hidden in candies near the town of Gyömrő. A girl received a lollipop with a nail concealed inside the wrapper but fortunately realized it before swallowing.
In Austria, incidents have been reported across four states. A 10-year-old girl in the Amstetten district suffered minor mouth injuries after biting into a chocolate bar containing a sharp object.
Gerhard Karner, Austria's Interior Minister, condemned these acts as "cowardly, malicious, and potentially life-threatening," while Johanna Mikl-Leitner, Governor of Lower Austria, declared firmly that the perpetrators "must face the full extent of the law."
