Nathan Johnson, a Democratic politician who once composed music for the famous anime Dragon Ball Z, won the Texas Attorney General election, drawing interest from anime fans worldwide after revealing he composed music for 67 episodes and 5 movies before entering politics and law.
Nathan Johnson, a 58-year-old Democrat who previously composed music for the popular anime Dragon Ball Z, was elected Texas Attorney General in the November 3 election, defeating Republican candidate Mayes Middleton.
Johnson secured the majority of votes in nearly all districts along the southern border of Texas, including many major cities, propelling him to become the state’s top legal official.
What sparked excitement and went viral online was the new Attorney General’s past career, as Johnson posted on his personal Facebook:
"If you grew up watching 'Dragon Ball Z,' you might know me better than you think because I composed music for 67 episodes and 5 movies of the anime. It was a truly enjoyable time."
The Dragon Ball Z movie soundtracks he composed include The World’s Strongest, The Tree of Might, Broly — Second Coming, Fusion Reborn, and Wrath of the Dragon. Additionally, he has done voice acting in the anime film Berserk.
Johnson recalled that during his music composition days, his son was only one year old and sat on his lap while battle scenes and explosions played on the screen, with the child excitedly shouting, "Oh dad, Goku!" making the experience very special.
He added that this work was both an outlet for creativity and a cultural connection few people get to experience, and it earned him admiration from his children and their friends.
According to IMDb, Johnson is credited as composer for numerous episodes between 1990 and 2008 and also worked as a voice actor in the anime film Berserk.
Before entering politics, Johnson was an experienced lawyer specializing in litigation and mediation. He holds a bachelor’s degree in physics from the University of Arizona and a law degree from the University of Texas at Austin.
He won election to the Texas State Senate in 2018 and took office in 2019 as the senator representing District 16.
Campaign information notes that during his four legislative sessions, he helped pass 134 laws aimed at protecting constitutional principles and ensuring government accountability.
Johnson’s victory came amid a strong showing by Democrats in the 2026 U.S. midterm elections, where they gained control of both the House and Senate.
He will succeed Republican Ken Paxton as Texas Attorney General. Paxton lost the U.S. Senate race to James Talarico despite openly receiving support from former President Donald Trump.
Assuming the Attorney General role makes Johnson the chief legal officer and top legal advisor for Texas, with key responsibilities including:
Representing the state of Texas in legal proceedings and court cases.
Defending state laws in courts and providing official legal opinions to government agencies.
Enforcing consumer protection laws and overseeing child support enforcement.
Prosecuting major legal matters that affect the public and Texas’s interests.
The Attorney General’s office also manages enforcement of child support orders and can litigate issues impacting the state.
Johnson’s rise to Attorney General marks a transition from a former famous anime composer to a key legal and political figure in Texas.
