Joko Widodo, Former Indonesian President, Appears at Jakarta District Court in Defamation Case Over Alleged Degree Forgery

Joko Widodo, former president of Indonesia, appeared at the Jakarta District Court in a defamation case concerning alleged degree forgery.

On 5 Nov 2026 GMT+7, Indonesia's Antara news agency reported that Joko Widodo, or Jokowi, former president of Indonesia, went to the East Jakarta District Court to testify in person in a defamation case involving allegations of degree forgery. The defendants are former minister Roy Suryo and health activist Tifausia Tiyassuma, also known as "Doctor Tifa."

The report stated that Jokowi arrived at the court at 08:30 local time in a black car with his entourage, bringing all his diplomas with him. When reporters asked about the documents, he replied, “They are all with me.”

Jokowi’s arrival caused a commotion in the courthouse lobby due to many supporters gathered to welcome him, shouting encouragement. East Jakarta police mobilized over 20,000 officers and managed traffic around the courthouse to maintain security during the former leader’s visit.

The Thursday hearings were divided into two cases: in the morning, Jokowi was scheduled to testify in the case involving former minister Roy Suryo; in the afternoon, the case against Tifausia would be heard. Both defendants are accused of defamation and slander after questioning the authenticity of Jokowi’s bachelor’s degree. They were named suspects in November 2025 and arrested on 19 June before being released later.

Previously, in May 2025, Jokowi had given a statement in person to investigators at the National Police Headquarters in Jakarta, clarifying disputes over the authenticity of his diploma and affirming he would present the original documents if requested by authorities.
