On 7 Nov 2026, Polish police reported a shooting at the central square in Kraków on Saturday afternoon local time, causing at least 5 fatalities and about 12 injuries. The suspect was shot by officers and hospitalized.
The incident happened around 3:00 p.m. local time when a man drove into the square and opened fire from inside the vehicle on pedestrians, causing deaths and injuries. Police believe the attack was random, with no specific target.
In an updated statement, police said emergency responders remain at the scene and that some of the injured include police officers.
“According to police, the man was dressed in military-style clothing,” a police spokesperson said. “During the arrest, officers used firearms, but the shooter fired back, injuring two officers.”
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk posted on social media that police are urgently investigating this “tragic shooting” and that he is closely monitoring updates from the Interior Ministry.
Poland enforces strict gun ownership laws similar to most European Union countries, with very few citizens permitted to possess or carry firearms in public.
