The US military is preparing to establish a task force to seek ways to blockade land transport routes into Iran, claiming it aims to intercept weapons and illegal goods shipments.
Foreign news agencies reported on 8 Nov 2026 that the US military announced forming a task force comprising 20 personnel to find ways to blockade and disrupt land transport routes into Iran, which the US says are used for smuggling weapons and illegal goods.
This measure continues from maritime blockades around Iranian ports in the Strait of Hormuz, enforced by the US since opening a prolonged conflict with Tehran that has lasted over eight months.
General Brad Cooper, commander of the US Central Command (CENTCOM), stated that this unit consists of civilian and military personnel, is based in Florida, and will coordinate efforts to stop the movement of advanced weapon systems, dual-use technologies, banned goods, and illegal financial routes along both land borders and the Caspian Sea.
“The work of this task force will help limit Iran’s ability to fund terrorism, build new weapons factories, and rebuild its military capabilities,” General Cooper said.
CENTCOM revealed that past maritime blockades have halted Iran’s crude oil exports valued at over $25 billion, as part of an “economic blockade” campaign started in August in response to Iran’s blockade and attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
Hossein Mohebi, spokesperson for Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), countered that the US plan “will fail” and will not be able to crush the economy or sever communication routes between Iran and neighboring countries as intended.
